This week I attended the 2nd Annual Opes San Diego Spring Event in benefit of the San Diego Food Bank’s “Food 4 Kids Backpack Program”, charity at the Barfly in La Jolla, Ca on March 10, 2011. In San Diego alone, there are approximately 500,000 people that are near the Federal Poverty Level (research done by the San Diego Food Bank.) This means that there are many San Diego residences that are literally starving on a daily basis. Among the many that are starving in San Diego, it is no surprise that children are among those in need. There are many children that look forward to attending school every week because this guarantees that they will get at least one meal five days a week, and the are the kids on the free school meal program. With the “Food 4 Kids Backpack Program”, each child that is on the free school meal program receives a backpack every Friday filled with child-friendly food that will sustain them through the weekend; then on Monday’s the return the backpacks to have them re-filled and re-distributed the following Friday.
Opes Advisors San Diego accepted donations and provided a silent auction with 100% the proceeds being donated to the San Diego Food Bank, a raffle to give away fun prizes to the people whom attended the event, and an entertaining band, Mystique Element of Soul, which was a real crowd pleaser. The event inspired San Diegans to donate new un-wrapped backpacks, child-friendly foods, and cash donations. I offered my services as a photographer and videographer.
Brian Sciutto & Jesse Tenenbaum, Opes San Diego’s Branch Owners, expressed that “the evening was an excellent success with an incredible turn out of approximately 300 attendees who donated more than 100 backpacks and a few hundred pounds of food. The cash donations and funds received from the silent auction are still being counted but are estimated to be in the thousands of dollars.” Sciutto, who is also the Vice President of the Del Sol Lion’s Club, went on to say, “I want to make sure that the people in San Diego County understand that although we live in some of the best conditions and climates in the world, there are so many of our close neighbors in our own local communities, especially children, that struggle tremendously every day with generating enough income to put food on the table. We choose not to monetize these event but rather to help magnify the needs of our local neighbors in need and do what we can to contribute to those needs.” Attendees enjoyed great food, professional networking and great company.
There are four professional networking events throughout the year hosted by Opes San Diego and they are usually tied to a local charity. Sciutto wanted to note that the Del Sol Lion’s Club, were also involved in assisting with the event and proceeds will be donated on behalf of the club serving the needs of North County communities. When asked why Opes San Diego chose the “Food 4 Backpack Program,” Sciutto explained, “I’m a big softy for kids being able to be kids and enjoying their childhood years without enduring the unfortunate circumstances they may have been born or brought into. It is also our Lion’s Club mission to help less fortunate children in our communities.”
