Burger Lounge, the San Diego-based restaurant serving organic grass-fed beef, quinoa veggie, and turkey burgers in a retro meets modern setting, is scheduled to open its doors in Hillcrest, on the corner of University and 4th Ave., in late August/early September. 

The Hillcrest location is Burger Lounge’s fifth location, joining the company’s La Jolla, Kensington, Coronado and Little Italy locations, retaining the brand’s signature chic, orange décor with a sizeable outdoor dining patio. La Jolla was Burger Lounge’s first location.

Dean Loring, co-founder of Burger Lounge, announced, “We’ve been scoping out this location for quite some time and feel the Burger Lounge brand is a great match for one of San Diego’s most charming and eclectic neighborhoods.”

Winner of “Best Local Hamburger Joint,” by San Diego Magazine, all of the Burger Lounge locations are open for lunch and dinner, serving a menu featuring TallGrass burgers, organic salads, fresh-cut fries, hand scooped milkshakes, root beer floats, premium beers, and homemade cupcakes.

This Examiner’s favorite order at Burger Lounge is the veggie burger with a Half and Half (half french fries and half onion rings) and is a loyal patron of the restaurant.  Do try Burger Lounge if you haven’t already.

Cups, La Jolla’s new cupcake lounge, has launched Cups Culinary which is a weekly series of hands on cooking and baking classes.  Each class will feature a unique theme based on the instructor and night’s menu items. “We’re thrilled to start the class series in our new comprehensive teaching kitchen, open to everyone, and complete with flat panel TVs and surround sound,” said Michelle Ciccarelli, owner of Cups. “This kitchen classroom is truly what inspired me to open Cups – my own love of teaching, and the ability to bring in like-minded chefs and let them share their passion for the craft with others.”

Continuing the Cups Culinary class series, every Sunday throughout September, is the Market-to-Table Class, featuring Chef Jesus Gonzales, former Creative Chef for Rancho la Puerta and Golden Door Spas. As part of this class, culinary students will explore the La Jolla Farmer’s Market, receiving informational tips on the seasonal produce, followed by a healthy lunch prepared and provided from the day’s shopping.  These classes are offered Sunday’s at 11am.

“After many years teaching culinary classes at Rancho La Puerta Spa, I am excited to open this new teaching facility much closer to home,” said Jesus, now managing Cups’ kitchen staff and Culinary class expansion. “We will continually evolve the classes we teach here: as we grow, so will our classes, like the upcoming ricotta cheese-making class.”

Parent’s Night Off – Cupcakes and a Movie is a Friday night class featuring, yes, cupcake decorating and a kid-friendly movie showing, permitting parents a night off. Cost is $25 and time is from 6:30pm – 9pm.  This gives you plenty of time to walk to one of downtown La Jolla’s fine restaurants for date night. Parent’s night off in September is on the 10th and the 24th.

The La Jolla Art Wine Festival returns to downtown La Jolla for a second year. Last year’s inaugural festival featured over 100 fine artists, drew nearly 20,000 attendees and returned nearly $40,000 to area schools. The Festival will take place in downtown La Jolla on upper Girard Avenue, between Pearl and Genter and at the La Jolla Elementary School playground. The Open Aire Market will not take place during the Festival .

The artists and entertainers have been confirmed for the 2010 Festival. Organizers are thrilled at the enhancements in quality and quantity for second year of this fall event. All 140 artists were selected by a jury, which reviewed more than double the number of applications from last year. The selections reflect the Festival’s commitment to explore the world of emerging established artists and provided 10 scholarships to Emerging artists. This year’s festival will feature the Surfside Wine Beer Garden presented by BBC, Live Entertainment at the NightDay Stage, the Ranch Coast Gourmet Marketplace, CVS Silent Auction and Geppetto’s Family Art Center.

The event donates all proceeds to key programs at three area public schools: La Jolla, Torrey Pines, and Bird Rock Elementary. These commonly underfunded programs include art, music, science, physical education, technology, and on-site medical care by a school nurse.
